As we celebrate the Black History Month, I reflect on the greatness of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He was a man with a great mind and a great heart. He was also an eloquent and forceful speaker whose oratory skills were second to none. One of my favorite quotes belongs to Dr. Martin Luther King “We must strengthen our backs and work for freedom. A man can’t ride you unless your back is bent.”
This is one of the most powerful quotes of all time and can uplift anyone when they are feeling discouraged. It demonstrates my thoughts that Dr. King had a huge heart. He did not just go down to the South just to liberate blacks from the plight they were in, he went there to liberate the white racist from the hate in their heart because it was killing them. That is so magnanimous it is hard to fathom a heart so large. We cannot give him enough appreciation and respect. We could use his words more than ever to find a cure for the divisiveness we experience in our country today. My hope is that we can get back to a nation that reflects his vision and move toward what he and others envisioned…a beloved community.
